11 Griot musicians create the energy balance between heaven and earth with rhythm & dance, the drum is synchronized with the heartbeat. The complex Sabar rhythms are the basis of Mbalax – a beat that opens the traditional music of West Africa to world music.
They master all types of drums represented in Senegal:
Sabar, Djembe, Tama, Dundun, Saourouba, Bougarabou, Tabala, Hiin, Djiembe, Tammasnun.
The traditional Sabar Dance of Senegal is characterized by temperament and power, expansive and changing figures inspire ever new images.
Rap has long been a popular genre among griot singers, using the voice to bring current content into an artistic form.
Yoro M’baye, born in 1966, comes from one of the most famous griot families in Mbour, Senegal, and learned to drum from his famous father Ngalla M’baye.
Yoro is an outstanding percussionist who is characterized by his special musical sensitivity, his incomparable, infectious passion for the Sabar and his artistic diversity.
His mother Seynabou Seck founded the group XALAAS “The Surprise” with other family members decades ago. With their father, they accompanied the election campaigns of the current President of Senegal, Abduleye Wade.
Yoro was the bass drummer of the group GAAGNI and later led the group XALAAS, which accompanies the daily, traditional festivals in Mbour.
He taught regularly in Senegal, including to Europeans.

He has also lived in Berlin since 2001 and founded the group XALASS-Compagnie with his brother Badou M’baye, accompanies dance courses & workshops for children and adults and gives drum lessons.
